San Diego, CA - Last weekend, Director Kelly Schwarze and Producer Charisma Schwarze accepted the award for You People at this Year’s California Film Awards. The film showcase spotlighted 2010′s brightest films, and awarded both features, music videos, and screenplays. You People wrapped up its festival run by scoring a “Gold Award” in the feature film category.

You People has had a serge in popularity since its release late last year, and is going to be making it’s Amazon VOD release next month.

VDE was also pleased with the recent press from Cineholic’s Blog, which captures the essence of the film’s witty plot line.

The film will screen twice during the festival at the Movie Experience, Tower Plaza in Temecula Valley, CA on Friday September 17th at 9PM, and on Sunday September 19th at 3PM.

Inclusion into the TVIFF marks a major milestone for the VDE Team, making this the biggest festival acceptance of their careers to date. Las Vegas, NV (Tuesday, August 3, 2010) Vision Dynamics Entertainment (VDE) will release Award-winning Las Vegas-based filmmaker Kelly Schwarze’s fourth feature film “You People” via VOD (Video On Demand) and DVD.

The film was shot last year in Las Vegas and features all Las Vegas- based talent.

VDE will release the film through new channels of distribution, including You Tube’s Rental Program, Amazon, and Film Baby. The company also plans to hold a public one-day theatrical release in Las Vegas on Wednesday November 3, 2010.

Kelly Schwarze states, “Our Company’s decision to release the film through non-traditional methods was to take advantage of the pioneering options that filmmakers now have available on the Internet. We didn’t see a positive future in distributing the movie through a second party distributor. We’ve been down that road before, and have seen the trouble that low-budget films have in dealing with no star power, and non-transparent sub distribution deals. Utilizing these new DIY (do it yourself) tools, we will be joining hundreds of other filmmakers who are already making some profits and keeping control of their properties.

Attending film studies at UNLV, and working as a professional commercial and film director for the last decade, Kelly has become one of Las Vegas’s most talented filmmakers. His long and evolving career has led him to direct several music videos, national commercials, web shows, and four feature length films. An opinion from Director/ Producer, Kelly Schwarze

The do it your-selfers out there in film are pioneering new methods of distribution. The real question is can self-distributing filmmakers see a profit with their films? Moreover, can they reach the amount of audiences they would with traditional models of distribution?

These are questions that many of us in the “Home Depot Moviemaking Generation” have been asking ourselves for a few years now. Lets face it. Distributors are not thinking of our best interests when they are acquiring our movies. In addition, giving an outside company full control of your film can be a horrifying experience. But before I go any further, let me disclose… A distributor has screwed me in the past, so my opinions of distributors are very low. Nonetheless, I have also had enough experience self-distributing my own content to know that it’s not for the faint of heart. There are many things to consider before making that choice. You never want to sell yourself short, but you also don’t want to be delusional. I have learned that you have to take certain steps before you can make good decisions with distribution. Here are a few.

Step 1: Has your film won any awards at festivals? Has it screened at major festivals?
If the answer is “Yes” then your chances of securing a profitable distribution deal from a distributor is slightly greater. If the answer is “No”, then you may be looking at a rough time securing any profitable deal from a distributor. “Advances” are almost unheard of these days, but if you haven’t built a festival presence, then you will almost certainly be banking on a “back-end net profits deal”, which you’ll most likely never see a return. Not to mention, if a film hasn’t built any festival buzz, it may cause a distributor to be more cautious with its release.

Remember: NO ADVANCE + CAUTIOUS RELEASE = AN UNSEEN MOVIE.

You may be better off pimping it yourself.

Step 2: Send out queries, set up screenings, send screeners to distributors. Maybe get a rep?
For me, the verdict is still out on the notion that “you NEED a Producer’s rep to sell your film.” However, having one who can get your screener to the top of the pile may be beneficial. Most of these reps know buyers personally, and have sold to them in the past. It’s a small community out there, and its likely that your rep has a good relationship with a few buyers. Therefore having some one on the inside can’t hurt. Although remember, it’s the job of acquisitions people to see films. They don’t want to miss anything, so set up screenings for your film and invite them. They want to see your film too!

If that doesn’t work, send them a screener. (Its always better for them to see the film in a theatre with other people. No distractions from phone calls, emails, or other pressures)

Step 3: Research the DIY Platforms
Hopefully, you haven’t gotten to step 3, but if you have, then you are most likely at the point of no return. But don’t fret. All is not lost. It just means that you have to work a bit more clever, and have to be willing to learn marketing and sales. The payoff for DIY is much more rewarding, because the profit stream starts with you and ends with you. Although the real issue is getting water in the stream. How can you do this? Well, marketing, of course. First you need to determine how you want to distribute your film. In larger older communities like LA, New York and Chicago, where art house theatres are readily available and affordable to rent, one may be inclined to “Four- Wall a film. The term comes from the idea that a filmmaker rents four walls to house his/her own theatrical release. Depending on the theatre, this can be difficult. If you live in a city like Las Vegas where art house doesn’t exist, you may be looking at expensive cineplex venues. The choice is obviously yours, but just be sure to research the cost and compare quotes.

There is always VOD (Video on demand), and the good ol Internet. With file sharing, and downloads, this opens the doors to piracy, but maximizes your marketing reach. More and more folks are going online to enjoy content. I personally don’t think there is any experience better than sitting in a theatre and watching a film, but I cannot speak for the new generation of movie-fans being brought up in the instant gratification generation. I do believe audiences are moving in that direction, and as home theatre systems, game consuls, and your computer merge closer and closer, the box store days are going the way of the dodo.

Step 4: Bringing home the bacon… or Tofu for vegans
Marketing! Marketing! Marketing! Many filmmakers are horrible marketing people. Me being one of them. As artists we are too close to our content. Its difficult to spin our product into gold when we are worried about what people think of it. Marketing people love the chase, and they understand that getting doors slammed on them is part of that chase. Filmmakers are too sensitive. So there are only two ways to get over this final step. Either get over it, and suck it up, or hire someone to do it for you. There are basic things you can do for marking. You can run ads in the news paper for theatrical screenings, you can use Facebook and Twitter to build a fan base. You can even dress up as a chicken and stand on a corner somewhere with a sign that says, “Go watch my film!” Whatever you do is fine, but just know who your audience is.

Within the past year, I am starting to scale down my audience expectations. As one person, or a small group of people marketing a film, it is much more practical to focus on a smaller group of fans. The focus being, think of your DIY platform as a small town general store. Focus on the locals. For example, its more practical for me to market in my home town rather than trying to reach audiences in Uruguay. Of course, the goal is to build buzz and have word-of-mouth help you spread the word to Uruguay. (By the way, I have nothing against Uruguay)

In thinking “inside the box” at first will almost certainly guarantee smaller profit margins. But tell your credit card companies to hold-off just a little longer, because as your fan base grows, new opportunities will emerge, and at the end of the day, you will see greater rewards in keeping control over your film. Keep marching. Keep Shooting, and keep your head up filmmakers!

Just when the future of VDE’s fourth feature film was anyone’s guess, You People surprises everyone by winning the “Official Finalist” Award from the Las Vegas International Film Festival Sunday night, and scoring an “Honorable Mention” at the 2010 Los Angeles Movie Awards on Monday.

These awards mark major milestones for VDE by becoming the first awards given to the company for their work. Already, VDE has submitted You People to over 25 festivals, and is now gearing up to submit to another 30 festivals before the end of the year.
